The houses in this district long ago were made of stone and mortar.
The most of the houses were thatched and some were slated.
The straw grown on the farm was used for thatching.
There was always a bed kept in the kitchen and it was known as the settle bed.
All the fireplaces were in the gable-walls. The front of the chimneys were made of stone and mortar.
There were no houses in this district long ago that had no chimney.
The windows were small and there was one pane of glass in them.
The floors were made of yellow or blue clay.
There was a half-door on about every house in the district and is still.
Coal and wood were mostly used in this district long ago. The light used in this district long ago was candles. Candles were not made locally.
