- Candle making was a great trade long ago. Melted fat on lard was used in making them. The instument used was called a mónla. Twisted thread was used for wicks. The melted fat was poured into the mónla in the middle of it there is a piece of stick to keep the wick straight and firm. Then it is placed in a cool place for one day. One of these candles were supposed to last for three weeks.
Quarrying was another great trade long ago. About hundred men were employed in each quarry. Fifty men were digging slates and flags while the other fifty men had horses and carts carrying the flags and slares to the ships.- Bailitheoir
