There are only three black smiths in Ennis, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Flannery and Mr. Reidy, the rest are farriers.
All Mr. Flannery's people before him were black smiths; his father and grandfather were known as great smiths for many years. Mr. Flannery's father John was known to be the best black smith in Ireland. He made the iron railing of Spring-Field house by hand and it was known to be the best of its kind in Ireland. he also made a tong for the cathedral bell.
