1. The Holy Wells of Emly Parish

   There are five holy wells in this parish. There is only one of them well known. There are four others but very little known. Their names are forgotten, except two of them.
   St Ailbes well is at the corner of the grave yard. It is a very large well. It is said that Saint Ailbe jumped from the hill of Knockcarron to the spot where the well is now. People go around the well the 12th September. They say the rosary also.
   It is said that a man with a bundle of straw sat in the verge of the well and fell in. People say that the water sprang up and the man was put standing on his legs on the ground.
   It is said also that when Saint Ailbe was young that he was put in a garden to keep away the birds. People take home the water and sprinkle it on their gardens because St Ailbe did that with the well water.
   There is another holy well behind the old church. It is under a rock. The owner of the land closed it, because it was dangerous to cattle. It is called Tobar Pheadair. People say that there is an underground passage from that well to the hill of Knockcarron.
   There is a well near Ballyvistea bridge a mile from Emly. It is called Tobar na Cille. The field that the well is in is called Gort na Cille. People say that there is a cure in the water before dawn. You should not let anyone see you taking it.
   There is a well in Tulla. It is said that the well was near the roadside. People say that a woman washed a child in the well. It is said that the well moved
