  1. Some people say that this is how Ballyporeen got its name. They say that long go a man named Fire Forbes built a mill in the spot where the village of Ballyporeen now stands. He burned the mill three times, and twice he was compensated but the third time, he was hunted out of the place. He used to dye clothes, and poreen means the berries for making dye. They say that is how Ballyporeen got its name.
