  1. The people around Ballyporeen made candles in the olden times. They got the tallow of a cow and melted it. When it was melted, they got rushes and they took the outside off the rushes. They then dipped each rush into the lard two or three times. They hung them on a tree until they were dry. When they were dry and hard, they took them down and used them. These candles were called “Rush Candles.”
