  1. Fairs Long Ago
Long ago there were many fairs held which are not held at all now-a-days.
There used to be three fairs in this district, one in Mountain Castle and one in Windgap and one at the Halfway. Two gangs of fighting men used go to each fair , "carawats" and "seana bests" and there would surely be a man killed every fair day.
Cattle, sheep, horses, hens, ducks, geese and all kinds of fowl and animals were bought and sold there. Long ago people used throw an old shoe or a horse shoe (for luck) after whoever was going to the fair. The person whom it was thrown after was supposed to carry it some distance and then hang it on a "sceac" tree.
Long ago cats were sold too at the fair. Their owners used be shouting "Black cats", " grey cats" "the finest you ever saw" They used to charge 6d or 8d for each cat.
If it is only a goat you have, stand in the middle of the fair
