- Butter is no longer made in the home in this parish as three creameries deal with the full milk supply.
In making it in the home formerly, many customs were observed.
After pouring the cream into the barrel, three drops of wrine and three coals of fire were added.
These precautions were taken to prevent neighbours taking the butter.
Every person coming into the house during the process had to take the handle and give a few strokes of turns.
A piece of furze stick was laid on the hob, and anyone who wished to light his pipe, had to do so with this.
Great care was taken that no one leaving the house, take fire with them. Pipes had to be quenched by those leaving, and on no account would anyone be allowed to take out a burning stick.How the Butter Taker was Stopped
