    The townland is known locally as "The acres". It is said that the landlord Mr. Langley brought over miners from England about 160 years ago to work the coal on his estate. He built for their accommodation 88 houses and gave them one acre each, hence the name.
    There is no local tradition as to how the townland got its name.
