    There lived in Ballinastick, Parish of Gortnahoe and barony of Slievedaragh, in 1798 a blacksmith named Paddy Fanning.

    There lived in Ballinastick, Parish of Gortnahoe and barony of Slievardagh in 1798 a blacksmith named Paddy Fanning.
    The house in which he lived is now occupied by Richard Maher and his family, an uncle of Maher's having married a grand daughter of Fanning's and as there was no issue the place reverted to the present onwer.
    After the suppression of the rising the yeomen of the district got busy rounding up all rebels.
    At a meeting which they held in Urlingford it was decided to arrest Fanning.
    His worth as a blacksmith was known and appreciated by a local landlord Mr Going of Ballyphilip House for whom he worked.
    Going was present at the meeting and made up his mind to save Fanning.
    So accordingly he sent a messenger to warn him of the danger.
    Fanning received the warning in time to elude his pursuers. As the district was
