  1. In the year 1821 a terrible crime was perpetrated at Ballynattin, at the foot of Slievenamon.
    A Kerry man by the name of Shea took a farm which O'Gorman, a native of the district wished to purchase. For this reason Shea was bycotted by the local labourers. When the harvest time came Shea hired a band of Spailpíní from Kerry.
    When the digging of the potatoes was over the Spailpíní began to prepare for their departure. The night before their intended departure O'Gorman and his accomplices surrounded Shea's house and set fire to it, keeping guard outside in case anyone would escape. Shea and his family and the Spailpíní - nineteen in all - including a baby were burned.
    A girl who happened to hear from one of the conspirators of the intended burning afterwards gave away much information which was valuable to the police as the secret preyed
