- Shrove - I have written about match making back in this book. Shrove was the time for making matches among the farming community. These matches were introduced at the local fairs, and the fortune agreed on. The couple met at some suitable place like the nearest town. If both agreed to get married, the day was fixed for walking the land. The bride's father accompanied by a few relations went to the bridegrooms farm. The walked every field, and even took a spade and dug the soil to see was it good and suitable for tillage.
Shrove Tuesday. This day was known as crying Tuesday. Girls who were advancing in age and who got no account of a match where known to cry on that day, and sometimes got angry and broke pots and pans around the house, when their parents made no move to get them married.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
