- In olden days hurling was much different
from hurling now. It was twenty one players
who used to play in those days instead of
fifteen as it is now. The ball was very big and
heavy. If one team was about to hurt another
team they would all pay in and buy a ball. The
way they used to train was:
They would leave the ball on the playing pitch
and each player use to try to take it home and when one
fellow would be within reach of the door with
the ball some other fellow would take it from him.
The Silvermines were they best team in Irel-
and for a long time. They had a cup and
they would challenge any team for the cup.
They challenged many teams and they beat them all.
On one Sunday the Silvermines challenged
Murroe. The hurling match was a thrilling contest.
The match started at half two and finished at
four o' clock. Murroe were beating the Silvermines
by one goal to one point. Near the end Martin
Gleeson from the Silvermines drove out between
the posts for a goal. When the match ended
the scores were one goal and one point to one
goal with the Silvermines the victorious team.
