- The houses in olden times were different from the houses nowadays. The houses in olden times were made of clay. The walls and the floor were made of clay and the roof was made from sticks and scraws. The fire was always in the gable end, and it was always sticks and turf they used to burn. It was candles they used to have for light and they used to make them themselves. There used be a bed in the kitchen and it used be always up against the wall, this bed was called a settle-bed.
