  1. A Story Of The Whiteboys.
For their activities in this district, two brothers named Shearman were arrested and thrown into jail. At that time, the wife could go into the jail and sleep all night with her husband. Shearman's wife got into the jail in this manner, and managed to smuggle some instrument in to her husband. He himself, his brother, and about twenty other prisoners escaped by cutting the locks in the doors of the jail.

Afterwards one brother was captured and hanged on a tree in the place where Mr. Costelloe's garden is now. The other brother was in the lime kiln on Mr. Riordan's lands, when the hanging was taking place and he saw the whole incident. There being no railway then to prevent him seeing. He was so shocked by the whole affair that he gave himself up to the soldiers. He was then hanged on the same tree as his brother had been hanged on earlier.
