  2. I shall not dwell any further on the customs practised on St. Stephens Day as such customs are general:-
    Chalk Sunday
    The first Sunday after Shrove Tuesday is known locally as "Chalk" Sunday.
    Young boys and girls go armed with pieces of the school-masters chalk to Mass on that day and after Mass they put a large X mark with chalk on the back of each bachelor and maid who did not "go off" during Shrove.
