- Potatoes are grown in our farm every year. About an acre of land is sown under potatoes each year. The ammount often varys. The farmers prepare the ground for all the potatoes. The ground is well manured with artificial manure or topdress. Then they open drills. The farmers cut the potatoes leaving one or two eyes in each potato. These are called sgiolláns. Then they are layed ten inches or a foot apart in allies of the drills. In most places the potatoes are sown in drills. Wooden ploughs were used long ago. About four or five years ago the smiths made iron ploughs. Wooden ploughs were not used since.
