- Soup-Houses of 1820After starvation and famine when England was trying to make the Irish people turn Protestant, they set up soup-houses throughout the country. The local houses were situated in Croagh, Ballingarry and Askeaton. One man in Croagh went to the soup-house. He used to get a horse from parson Orchard, to take him to Protestant service.One day as he thought to exchange his horse for that of a Catholic neighbour's, the neighbour's son, a little boy of four years, was listening to the bargain and he said to his father, "Do not exchange our horse for that old souper's horse".
