  1. Food in Olden Times - Bread.
In olden times potato cakes, oaten meal bread and stamped cakes were made. They made bread from wheat grown in the district. The wheat was ground with grind stones known as querns.
Stampy bread was considered the nicest kind of bread and this is how it was made. A few potatoes were grated and flour was mixed through them and a bit of butter and then this was put in the frying pan and fried.
Enough bread was baked on one day to do for a week. A cross was cut on top of the cake before being baked. The vessel in which the bread was baked was called a bastable. Bread was sometimes baked on a griddle.
