- The houses long were a lot different to what they are now. They were made of mud with a thatched roof. In most houses there were but two rooms. It was very seldom you would see a chimney on a house. It was through a hole in the roof the smoke used to go. The fire was in the middle of the floor. In the kitchen they used to sleep on a settle bed. Half doors are very common in small towns yet. Most floors were made of mud or paving stones.
