- In a certain part of the County Cork there was a house the door of which had to be raised a little in order to open it easily, and for this purpose a hatchet was generally used.
One evening a knock came to the door and a little boy was sent to see who was there.
"Who's there?" asked the boy.
"It's the Sergeant-Open!" came the command from without. The boy shouted back to those who were at tea in the room beside the kitchen It's Sergeant Murphy; get the hatchet. The Sergeant did not wait.
