- Marriages most frequently take place locally during Shrove Monday and Friday are thought unlucky for marriage. A local custom connected with Shrove is match-making and money is given as dowry in some cases, and stock or goods is given in others.
Marriages took place locally in the houses up to a period of over sixty years ago. The local custom observed on a wedding-day is holding a wedding-feast, in one of the wedding party's houses or a hotel. The local "straw boys" hold a wedding procession and visit the house of the parties the night they return from their honeymoon. The "straw boys" dress in local costume, and get a good reception and money. Sometimes they light bonfires on the way, hailing the wedding party home. Their behaviour is generally good and they play on many musical instruments.
