  1. In by-gone years people used make their own candles and called them halfpenny dips. These candles were not like out own ordinary candles of to day. They made them from tallow, and they used enquire if there was any cow killed in the district. Often the men fought for the tallow. The only man we know in this district that made these candles is Mr Ned Naughton.
This is the method they used to make them. They melted the tallow at the fire and rolled it between their hands until it was round their hands until it was round and long enough, then they drew a cord through the tallow as a wick. This is what they called the halfpenny dip. Then the makers used sell them in the shops. The old people considered them very dear.
