If my country was free O this then she'd be mine
I'd buy for her jewels and diamonds so fine
But my country in bondage and must be set free
From the foes that oppress her green isle of the sea.
If my country was free O tis then she'd be mine.
She's my sweet little girl from Barnagh
The above song was composed by the late John Walsh of Rathcahill Newcastle West, well know as "Jack the Bard". In it he alludes to a charming young lady by the name of Kitty Aherne. She was the daughter of a farmer and was much admired for her beauty and grace. Before she was thirty she married a farmer's son in the Parish of Castlemahon
