  1. Shrove Tuesday in the olden days was a day of much rejoicing, and many of the old customs still survive, while others are spoken of yet. Most of the marriages of the year were celebrated on that day, and it was in connection with those marriages, that all those old customs are spoken of. In the old days, the marriages were usually celebrated in the evening at the house of the bride. After the ceremony, supper was taken and a great number of the friends of each party were invited to the
