- Old HousesThe houses that existed in this district formerly were known as cabins with mud walls and thatched with wheaten reed and others with rushes. The reed was got from the home grown wheat and the rushes were got from the swampy fields of the district. Up to recent years very little slate was used and that which was used was procured from the slate quaries. Iron and asbestos was unknown until recent years for house covering.In former years there was usually what was commonly called a settle this was always placed against the wall in the kitchen and for use this was opened out and used as a seat. The chimneys were usuallly made of timber and covered inside with mortar or clay. In all the old houses the fireplace was always at the gable wall, and wood with very little coal and turf were used for the fire.
