1. The Potato Crop

   Potatoes are grown on our farm every year, and we set about a half an acre of them. We nearly always sow the same amount. My father and my brother prepare the ground. We never manure the ground before turning it up. We sow the potatoes in ridges and this is how they are made. First of all they get a rope, and tie it on to a stick at each end of the garden.
   Then they get the spade and cut the ground along the rope with it. Then they turn up the sod, they have to turn up two rows of sods, one at each side to make the ridge. Then they turn them back again, and they spread out the seed, they put manure on top of the seed, and sometimes lime to keep the worms from eating them. The ridge is two feet wide.
   Then they dig up the furrow and put earth on top of the ridge. But later on, when the stalks are up over the ground they earth them up again, all this is done with the spade. In some places it is done with the plough. We buy the spades in a shop but they are put in, in the district.
   The potatoes must be prepared for the seed. The large potatoes are cut into two or three parts, but there must be two eyes in every part. Then they put them into lime and sprout them. The local people help one another sowing the potatoes, in spreading manure or spreading
