- Kitty Byrne,
Kilscannel.Old Houses. In former times mostly all the houses in my district were thatched. Some of the thatch was bought in the market, and it was called reed. Other people thatched their houses with stuff like reed, which was to be found by the banks of the river. The chimney was made from butter boxes. They cut a hole in the wall for windows. They kept a cow, goat and donkey at one end of the house. They had a loft over the door in which they kept fowl. A bed called a settle bed, was kept in the kitchen. The fire place was at the gable end of the house. The old methods employed for giving light at night, were splinters, dip candles and rush lights.Candles were made in my district locally.Told to me by my mother.
