  1. A few years ago the death took place of one of the most "famous" poets of this district. He was Mick Taylor who lived in Upper Athea. He was a postman and besides being a poet was also a great flute player. He wrote a song entitled "The Barns by the Galey."
A famous rhymer who still lives in this parish is Michael Drury He composed the following poem which is entitled "Maggie from the Lots".
    I
On the banks of Serahan river
    There dwelt a comely maid,
And many the young and foolish youth
    This fair one has betrayed.
She was admired by rich and poor
    Though humble was her lot
    Her name I wont tell
    But where she dwelt
    Was always called the Lot.
