  1. Churning.
    Most people are now sending milk to local creameries but as late as twenty years ago nearly every farmer who owned three or four cows made butter, and sold it in the markets. Butter was made in an article called a churn. This was about a foot and a half in diameter at the bottom and a foot at the top. There were two kinds of churns, the components being the barrel shaped, but some people also had the tankard make.
    The chief parts of the churn were the dash or staff, the lid and the beaters. The butter was made in this manner. At first the cream which was taken from the separator was put into the churn through the lid in the side. Then the handle was turned and turned until the cream cracked. Then the butter was made. It was then taken out and salted and sold in firkins to the buyers who attended markets int he local towns. Many people thought that butter could
