Ar an leathanach seo

  1. The hedge schools were conducted in the open air in Summer and in Winter in barns.
    The scholars went from one farmer's house to another. The farmers assisted in every way both teachers and scholars. The feathers of the geese were kept carefully for pens and the ink was homemade too.
    Splinters of bog-deal were used for lighting the place. Later there were moulds from which candles were made. These only gave poor light and often the scholars got blind.
    The ink was made from nuts collected in the neighbouring woods - principally oak nuts.
    Mary Vaughan taught in Glin. The children paid her 1d a week and a sod of turf every day. She taught reading and spelling in Irish.
