The recognised times for marriages was in Shrove.
The days considered unlucky were Mondays and Fridays.
The months considered unlucky were May and August.
"Matches" are still made and were long ago. This Shrove we had two such "matches"
Marriages were in the houses about 70 years ago, now they are in the church in the morning.
Long ago there was a "drag-home" and the greater the wealth of the happy pair, the greater the "drag"
Racing on bare backed horses was frequent at these drags and the man who reached the bride's home first boasted of it many a day and many a year.
Often the women were as well able to ride as the men but the ladies who did it were supposed to be "airy" and so the custom died out.
