"Matches" are still made and were long ago. This Shrove we had two such "matches"

Racing on bare backed horses was frequent at these drags and the man who reached the bride's home first boasted of it many a day and many a year.
Often the women were as well able to ride as the men but the ladies who did it were supposed to be "airy" and so the custom died out.
