  1. Shrove Tuesday
On Shrove Tuesday evening pancakes are made. A gold ring is put in one and a silver ring in another. The gold ring, is to the finder, marriage and the person who gets the silver ring will enter the religious life.
A button is sometimes put in and this indicates that the person will be an old maid or a bachelor.
The evening and part of the night is spent dancing.
Songs and ghost stories follow but when ten o'clock comes all retire to be up early next morning for the Lenten devotions.
