  1. Long ago shops were very uncommon and the people had to go long distances for their purchases. Selling and buying was carried on after Mass and is still carried on. The articles which were sold are, tea, sugar, bread, meat, and other household needs. Sometimes the farmers bought no meat, as they used their own bacon and pork.
When people got a thing on "tick" it meant that they did not pay for it until a future date. Tinkers and gipsies use the word "boot". When they are bartering a bad article for a good one they call it a "swop. Money is often given with one animal and this money is called "boot". It is unlucky to buy a thing on Monday and if you do you will be buying for the week. Hucksters go around buying poultry and eggs. Other people go around buying nags feathers and horse-hair. Five shilling pieces and four-penny pieces were formally used. The four-penny bits are after dying out altogether
