- The people long ago had three meals every day. One meal was eaten early in the morning, another at midday, and another late at night. The people used to have porridge known as stirabout made of Indian meal. This was eaten with cold milk so as to cool it. The people often had only goats milk to drink.
The food used for the dinner was potatoes and salt. An old saying says that in Ireland the people had potatoes' by day, potatoes by night and if they got up at midnight they would have potatoes." The table was in the middle of the kitchen. Big vessels made of tin and known as "ponnies" were used before cups.
Long ago it was the custom to have a great feast at Christmas. A lot of eggs were eaten at Easter and tea or fresh meat was eaten only at Christmas.- Bailitheoir
