- Paddy Hoare, better know as "Paddy the Thatcher" lived in Kilderrig near Churchtown South. In olden times the farmers threshed the wheat with flails to make reed to thatch the houses. The people made scalps of the furze to hold the reed on the houses.
- Thatching was a great trade in the country long ago, for all the roofs of the houses were mostly made of thatch. Nowadays, very few houses are thatched. A man named Mat Hoare thatches the houses now, and he lives in Ballycrenane. The houses are thatched with wheaten straw and pointed furze sticks are also used.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
