“The doors were locked by a long stick called the "batha bolaigh"...”
The walls were mostly made of mud. Some of the chimneys were made of mortar and stones, while others were made of clay and wattles. The house long ago were never ceiled.
In very old houses there used to be no chimney but a hole in the roof of the house, and the fire in the middle of the floor. In the windows of most houses there was no glass but shutters. Some of the floors were flagged while others were made of mud.
Bog-deal, dips, rush-lights and candles were used for giving light. Candles were made in the farmers' houses out of tallow and lard and a wick.
