- Most of the houses in this district long ago were thatched. Very few of the poor people lived in slated houses.
There were always a few thatchers in the district, who were employed by the people for thatching the houses.
The poor people usually lived in mud-walled-cabins, and in many of these cabins there was no room except the kitchen, and in this case the bed was kept by the fire.
The beds in which servant boys slept in farmer's places were called "settles", which were made of timber, and were such that they could be folded up during the day with the bedclothes inside, and let down at night to act as a bed.
