  1. Long ago when a person died the old women of the neighbourhood would come into the wake house crying over the corpse and reciting the praises of the dead man or woman. This would generally be repeated from time to time until the corpse was taken to be buried.
    This custom was called by the old people "Keening their dead".
    In some parts of the country there were women going around for that purpose. They were called "Keeners" and in many cases were hired and paid by the relatives of
