In years gone by the old people built the walls of their houses with sods cut out of the dykes and placed over each other and packed with earth. When the walls were completed they were roofed mostly with common fir. When the house was roofed the people went to the mountains and pulled the heath and tied it into bundles and brought it home to thatch the houses.
Some people such as the small farmers would thatch the house with straw over the heath after a year or two. But the poor man should depend on the heath all the time.
When the houses were thatched and covered they were plastered inside and outside with clay.
Those houses were called mud-wall cabins.
