If they saw cattle lying down in a field, they knew the day was going to be wet, because the cattle wanted a dry place to lie on when it rained.
If they saw curlew flying towards the sea, they would say there would be storms inland, and if they saw the curlew flying inland they knew that there would be stormy weather on the coast.
