  1. Almost every spot in Ireland has some curious name attached to it. Many places have got their names from some people who lived there, or accidents which have happened there. the townland in which I live is known as Lismealcunnin which means "The Fort of the Rabbits."
    The fields in our farm all have names, some having got them from their size or shap such as, "The High Field", "The Three Cornered Field" and several others. "The Small Field" which was formerly known as "The Tailor's Field" because a tailor lived and worked there but there is no sign of any house there now. "The Dasher's Field" once belonged to a man by the name of "Dasher" while "Lehane's Leaca" must have got its name for the same reason. "The Branner" got its name from the fact that it was ploughed and left idle during the Summer. "The Field Below the Road" was in olden times called "The Cluain" or meadow.
