- Candle making. Candles are made from the fat of a cow. The fat is melted. a piece of cotton is put into the middle of a candle mould. Then the fat is poured into the mould. When the fat is set it slips out of the mould in the shape of a candle.
Soap making. Soap was made by fat and lye. The fat and lye are boiled together and put into moulds and left there until it is set.
Basket making. Baskets were made long ago of twigs. A small basket was called a skey. It was the shape of a boat, and was used to strain potatoes and bring turf from the reek.
