Ar an leathanach seo
- About 72 years ago a hedge school was situated
in Foyledown, in the parish of Meelin in
the Co, of Cork, in a thatched house in
Mr Patrick McAuliffe's land. Some of the
people of this district attended school there.
Master Casey was the teacher who taught
in that hedge-school.
His home was in Foyledown for some years.
The people of the district paid him a
small sum of money every quarter. There
was not any Irish spoken by master
or pupils in the hedge-school. The subjects,
they were taught, were writing, English
and Arithmetic. The seats that were used
in this hedge school were stripping sods
obtained from the bog.
I made inquiries of my parents if they
ever heard the names of any books
used in the hedge-school, they said "they
never heard of any". Long ago in these
hedge schools there were not any blackbord.
The children wrote on slates with chalk,
as paper was very scarce in those days.
Master Casey, who was teaching in this
hedge school died some years afterwards.
