- The way in which potatoes were set in fresh ground. (No. 5)My father told me that when he was young very few ploughs were used, especially in new ground. With a spade they "grubbed" the ground.
First, they marked the length of each ridge with two bits of sticks having a length of string out of each stick placing them a certain distance from each other so as to keep them straight. They turned out a sod, a foot in width at each side. After a few days they brought manure and put it between each of the sods. Then the seed was put down on the manure and the sods were turned in from each side on to the manure and seed again.
