North of Blarney where the Martin River swings under Waterloo Bridge into a great deep wooded glen many must have seen on the hill over the bridge a humble church and near it a Round Tower. To those who know the district and its varied past the Tower will recall memories of Fr. "Mat" Horgan, "The parish priest who built the round towers".
Fr. Mat as he was popularly known to everybody, was born in the neighbouring townland of Ballinraha. In 1803, after long and arduous preparation for his sacred calling he was ordained a "Priest for ever". To his great joy he was appointed Parish Priest of Blarney and Whitechurch and the place of his boyhood was soon to see him entering with enthusiasm and religious fervour into the many and varied duties of a country P.P.
