    Long ago the people lived on potatoes and sour milk. Sometimes they boiled a pot of oatmeal for supper. At that time there were no creameries. The people made their own butter at home. When they milked the cows every morning and evening they put the milk into pans. Then they skimmed off the cream and made butter. There was a firkin in nearly every house and the woman of the house took the butter once a week on her back to the market.
