- There were many more houses in Millstreet in former times as the population was much greater before the Famine times than now. Most of them were thatched. This thatch was of either straw or rushes. These rushes were got from marshy places one of them being in Mr. Sullivan's land which is about half a mile from Millstreet.
These houses were made of mud or earth being used as mortar and white-washed on the outside.
The windows were very seldom made of glass. They were made of netted wire with a shutter inside.
The most of them were very small consisting of two rooms a kitchen and bedroom.
The furniture of the kitchen consisted of a settle which was used as a bed by night and a couch by day; a dresser and chairs made of ropes which are still to be seen in many of the old country houses. These were called Súgán chairs, twisted straw was often used instead of rope.
The floor was made of dry mud(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
