Long ago when people wanted candles, instead of going to the shop and buying, they made them at home from the fat of cows. When the cow was killed the fat was taken and melted in a pan over the fire. A mould was then ready and the hot grease was poured into it. For the wick they used a thread which was held in the centre of the mould while the grease was being poured in. Then these liquid candles were put away in a cool place to harden. When well set the candles came out quite easily from the mould and were then fit for use.
