  1. People generally are afraid of seeing supernatural things, or "things from the other world" at night, and they don't like to be out after 1 o'clock on any night but especially on Saturday nights.
There is a place in this district at, or near, which a "ghost" dressed in white used to be seen about midnight.
People didn't care to pass it at that time.
One night a man had to pass that way.
He had been in town, and he had drunk some whisky which gave him courage.
He had a horse, and car, and as he was going along he saw the "ghost" in white.
He passed him and then he tied the horse on the side of the road.
"Indeed", said the man, "I'll make that fellow pay for this."
He had a whip in the car (at that time there used to be thick handles on whips) and he went right up to the "ghost" and began to beat it, but "alas" a man cried for mercy.
When he had beaten the "ghost" enough he granted him mercy and let him go.
